Mingled Fires

Check out this awesomeness that I snagged at a used bookstore in Dumbo last week--halfie pulp fiction! Or, as the blurb on the back puts it: "With compelling candor, this unusual book tells of a girl half yellow, half white, who is pursued by three men."

Visiting Wai Gong

On Sunday we trekked out to Raritan, NJ to visit Tara's grandfather (a.k.a. Wai Gong)! We had cake (check out how Wai Gong can't wait for cake), played Mah Jong, took some family photo style pictures and ate a lot of Chinese food. We couldn't stay very long, but we made plans to come back soon and have a sleepover with "Singing in the Rain" and lots more Mah Jong!

I just found a recipe online for making ice cream in a plastic bag! Life is getting better...

Sang's Birthday

Friday, February 16th was Sang's birthday, and since he didn't post about it, I guess it's up to me! We started out at Stony Creek for drinks and then moved on dinner at Bamiyan for Afghani food (yum!!). But don't take my word for it, check out these pics of the handsome Bae boys and all that fine female companionship!

(Julia was there too, but I think she was behind the camera for these!)

Chinese New Year

Yesterday, James, Sameer and I decided the nasty weather wasn't gonna stop us from having a full-immersion Chinese New Year's experience, so we headed down to Mott Street to usher in the year of the boar. It was your typical clusterf*ck of dragon dances,

Chinese families elbowing their way through hordes of delighted tourists,

confetti poppers going off left and right,

and trash strewn as far as the eye could see.

In other words, loads of super loud fun! They even brought back the fireworks display which Giuliani had banned way back when. We took a break to gorge ourselves on dim sum at the Golden Unicorn on East Broadway, where I spotted a halfie girl seated with her parents a few tables away--it's totally Cara circa 1985!

Valentine's Day

We bought all the ingredients to make eggplant lasagne, but it turns out the noodles we bought on our first day here (what were we thinking?) had been eaten by bugs. So Jeff and I made lasagne noodles from scratch according to the Peace Corps Tanzania Cookbook (and cut them just right to fit the size of the pan -- 'cause they're from scratch so we can!) There's cheese to be had on our island now -- we tipped off our fav store that they could make some $$ that way. Our first lasagne was SO GOOD!!

Will try to post a pic later. My blogger is coming up in German so.. I dunno what the deal is.

Puzzle Update

I actually finished the puzzle on Monday (that's right, two days after opening the box), but I had people over on Sunday, February 10th for knitting/puzzling. Here are pics:

It's an Edward Gorey picture and it's pretty awesome. It seems to be some kind of performance featuring, among other things: a dancing dog, a man on a bicycle, a devil, a small, ugly child with an enormous head, and two angels with jello molds. I'll post more pictures of the finished puzzle later.

Hot Hot Friday Night!

We started this blog to keep you in on our scorching hot social lives, so in keeping with that goal, here's some pictures of what we did last night. I know, I know, I can feel you turning green with envy from here!

Dispatch from Tanzania

From Cara (who hasn't yet gotten her blogger account working):

Hey Gals!!

here are some pics of the Flat Friends from Tanzania!!

These are from the three parks we went to (Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorogoro Crater) and from Kendwa Beach in Zanzibar. Julia -- I lost your Flat Shirt at some point, so I made you a new one. No sunbathing naked for you, so you're clothed, except in that last shot...

Enjoy!!!

Pop Rally at Moma

Last night we went to a hyperarty "happening" at Moma. Lots of hipsters, free drinks, and Cat Power! Sober! She was super coherent, but sang a short set - possibly because there were a *lot* of people talking. But she didn't throw a tantrum or anything! Instead, she came out and sang a completely charming a capella encore, mostly to Doug Aitken (whom the whole shebang was ostensibly about), but with a few shy smiles at the audience - unheard of! Then it was free posters for all and home to bed (for me at least).
